One of the stranger books as a reader and as a bookseller has been Chuck Klosternman’s book Football.

In short, it’s not an X’s and O’s book or a paean to the gridiron or a series of essays against the sport. It’s a mix of a lot of related topics surrounding football. One of the major themes is that Klosterman expects that the sport will decline in popularity over the next decades to the level of horseracing and boxing, which were the most popular sports in America 100 years ago.

As a bookseller I thought the cover of the book was interesting:

For more info about the book check out Dwight Garner’s review of the book in the New York Times Book Review or the reading notes from my book reading “club”, the GRSG. The book is available at the Destination: Books online store or you can catch me at my next popup which is Saturday a.m. May 9th at the Freedom Farmer’s Market at the Carter Center.

At the pop-up we can have discussions on who the book is really for:

  • a.) Mothers who like football
  • b.) Mothers who dislike football
  • c.) Men who devote their television lives to the sport
  • d.) Men who liked the sport in their youth, but have since soured on the sport
  • e.) All of the Above
